SAN ANTONIO – After a violent weekend in San Antonio, what comes next?

This past weekend, San Antonio faced a surge in violence, with KSAT reporting on six shootings within just 48 hours. Tragically, at least two of these incidents were deadly. In light of this alarming trend, local leaders and organizations are calling for stronger community involvement and preventive measures to help curb this violence.

Bennie Price, the CEO and founder of Big Mama’s Safe House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending gun violence, emphasized the importance of community action. “You hope it doesn’t happen,” Price stated. “But what do you do to keep it from happening?”

Big Mama’s Safe House aims to support survivors and reduce gun violence through various initiatives. “If it happens to one of us, it happens to all of us,” Price added, highlighting the shared impact of violence on the community. “When they start shooting these guns, they’re not shooting one or two bullets; they’re shooting a lot of them.”

The recent shootings took place in different locations, with one incident involving a man being shot in the neck and shoulder. According to a spokesperson from the San Antonio Police Department, “The incidents referred to have all been isolated incidents.” They encourage residents to report any suspicious activities by calling the SAPD Non-emergency number at 210-207-7273 or 911 in emergencies.

In response to the ongoing violence, Big Mama’s Safe House is actively working to support youth through prevention programs and workforce development initiatives. Their goal is to provide young people with the tools and opportunities they need to make positive choices and stay safe.
